Open a brokerage account without skipping the checks
The guides on Northline assume you can buy a broad fund in small pieces and leave it alone. Trading 212’s Invest account is one place that does that. This page is the checklist, plus our referral invite. It is not an application, and it is not advice.
What to check first
- 01
Country and account type
Confirm Trading 212 offers an Invest account where you live. The entity you contract with depends on your country. Read that name on their page, not in a summary like this one.
- 02
Invest, not CFD
If you want to own funds and shares for years, use the Invest account. Contracts for difference are a different product, with the risk of losses that do not match a simple buy-and-hold plan.
- 03
Fees on the day you join
Check the live schedule for currency conversion, card deposits, and anything else that is not the fund’s own expense ratio. Commission-free is not the same as cost-free, and schedules change.
- 04
Tax wrapper
Ask what shelter exists where you file. UK residents may have an ISA allowance set by the government. Other countries have other rules. Northline cannot tell you which box to tick.
- 05
The fund, before the catalogue
Name one broad fund, or a two-fund mix, before you open the app. A pie is optional. A pile of themes you met in the search box is not a plan.
A plain first setup
Keep an emergency fund in cash, outside the broker. Then buy one global equity ETF, or a global fund plus a calmer holding, with a monthly amount you can automate. Fractional shares mean the month’s transfer does not have to match a whole unit price. Pies are useful when you truly have more than one holding. They are optional when you do not.

Questions
Does the link make Trading 212 cheaper?
No. A referral reward, if one is due, is between the programme and this site. Your costs are the ones in the fee schedule and inside the fund. Read both.
Are CFDs part of this plan?
No. This journal is about owning broad funds for a long horizon. Do not substitute a CFD because it sits in the same app.
